Group Work | Site Design | Rome Semester

The Penn State Polycultural Institute was the first true architecture group project that I completed at Penn State.  In a team of three, we were responsible for designing a research and exhibition space for agricultural projects.  This project was also placed on a rural site, which our group honored by tucking our project into the trees on the hilly portion of the site, as we were attempting to leave the fields in a more natural state.  Our intervention amongst the trees was designed to appear minimal upon entry, and commanding from nature.  The building itself was greatly sunken into the earth, so as to draw the user into the hill itself, where the program was hidden within the hill/building.  After snaking through the building, the user is brought upon the panoramic views of the natural site through the glass curtain walls that make up most all of the field-facing wall.  The rest of the building is formed predominantly of folded steel plates, which are rusted so as to blend with the surroundings.  The form of the building is a dynamic, interlocking fold pattern derived from the contours, and folding exercises that our group explored early in the project.   This project was an awesome experience, as the group thinking allowed for such an interesting, dynamic project that we were all very proud to be a part of.
